About the author
Poet, translator and essayst, Annelisa Alleva was born
in Rome in 1956, and graduated at the University of Rome in Russian Language
and Literature in 1980.
She was awarded a scholarship to live and work for one year in St. Petersburg
(Russia,1981-1982), and in Brno (Czechoslovakia, August 1978), Prague
(Czechoslovakia, 1979-1980), Warszaw (Poland, September 1983), and in
Ohrid (Macedonia, August 1984,1986).
At present she teaches at the University of Rome 1, “La Sapienza”,
Literary Translation from Russian to Italian, and lives in Rome with her
husband, the Italian painter Ruggero Savinio, and their two children,
Andrea and Gemma.
She has published eight books of poetry: Mesi (Months), Galleria
Centofiorini, Civitanova, 1996; Chi varca questa porta (Who trespasses
this door), Il Bulino, Roma, 1998; Lettera in forma di sonetto (Letter
in the form of a Sonnet) Il Labirinto, Roma, 1998; Astri e sassi
(Stars and Stones) , Atelier Arte, Matera, 1999; Aria di cerimonia
(Air of ceremony) , Galleria Centofiorini, Civitanova, 2000, L'oro
ereditato (The inherited gold), shortlisted for the Viareggio Prize,
Il Labirinto, Rome, 2001, and Istinto e spettri (Instinct and
ghosts), shortlisted to the Viareggio Prize, Orta Prize, San Pellegrino
Prize, Jaca Book, Milano, 2003. Her latest book of poems, La casa
rotta (The Broken House) came out in 2010 with Jaca Book, Milano.
In 2013, a collection of essays and memories titled Lo
spettacolo della memoria (The spectacle of memory) was published
by Quodlibet, Roma.
She held many readings of her poems in Italy and abroad (New York, Johnson
in Maine), where she was invited at Vermont Studio Center as a visiting
writer in June 2002; San Paulo (Brazil, 2004); Saint Petersburg (Russia,
2005), Tbilisi and Batumi (Georgia, 2008), Hawthornden Castle (Scotland,
2008).
She organized a Poetry Reading, the first Sunday of August for five years
(1997-2001), in the “Teatro della Concordia” in Montecastello
di Vibio (Perugia) with the International School of Art, reading her own
poetry translated into English, and also poems by other authors, read
in original and in her own translations.
Annelisa Alleva has translated a complete volume of prose work of Aleksandr
Pushkin (Romanzi e racconti, Garzanti, Milano, 1990), Anna
Karenina by Lev Tolstoy (Frassinelli, Milano, 1997), an anthology
of Russian contemporary authors, Metamorfosi (Avagliano, Salerno,
2004), the correspondence Orest Kiprenskij e l’Italia (Edizioni
del Borghetto, Roma, 2005) and an anthology of 16 Russian contemporary
poets, Poeti russi oggi (Libri Scheiwiller, Milano, 2008, Lerici
Pea Mosca Prize).
She lives in Rome.
